Buongiorno and welcome to RomeCabs Italy Travel Blog! Tuscania is a journey through time and tranquility, a place where time stands still, and every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered. Tucked away in the heart of the Tuscia region (about 1.5 hours north of Rome), this hidden gem exudes an enchanting charm that captivates visitors from near and far.
Let’s take a short trip to Tuscania – one of our favorite small medieval towns in central Italy.
.
Tuscania’s fascinating 3,000 year old history
Tuscania’s history goes way back, all the way to the bustling times of the Etruscan civilization, dating back to somewhere between the 9th and 2nd centuries BCE. The Etruscans ruled over most of central Italy called Etruria – an area that now occupies Lazio (the region of Rome), Umbria, and Tuscany.
Back then, the Etruscans were the big shots known for their fancy culture and incredible artistry. They set up Tuscania as a bustling hub for trade, culture, and all sorts of craftsmanship. Plus, they chose a smart spot – high up on a plateau that is currently known as Colle San Pietro (Saint Peter Hill), making it easy to defend and perfect for growing into a prosperous settlement.
Fast forward to the Roman era, Tuscania kept on thriving. The Romans saw its strategic importance and scooped it up into their ever-expanding empire. Tuscania became a key pit stop along the Via Clodia, a major Roman road that linked Rome to Etruria and beyond. With the Romans in charge, the city flourished even more, with fancy villas, baths, and temples popping up left and right.
.

.
But, as history goes, after the Western Roman Empire fell, Tuscania hit a rough patch. It got overrun by various barbarian tribes like the Ostrogoths and Lombards before finally getting snatched up by the Papal States. Barbarians were called such from the Ancient Roman times when they referred to anyone who was not a Roman citizen as a “barbaroi“.
The Middle Ages weren’t exactly smooth sailing either. Tuscania got caught up in all sorts of fights between the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire, not to mention all the squabbles between noble families. Despite the drama, Tuscania managed to hold onto its cultural and artistic roots, showing off its gorgeous churches and cool old buildings that still stand tall today.
.

.
Come the 19th century, Tuscania joined the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, and folks started getting really interested in its history and culture again. They made sure to preserve and restore all the ancient sites and beautiful buildings, making sure future generations could enjoy them too.

MEDIEVAL MAGIC – ROME COUNTRYSIDE TOUR
We had a wonderful day May 9th ‘23 visiting medieval villages with Rome Cabs. Our driver and guide Leonardo was waiting for us when we left the ship and we headed off on a comfortable and informative tour. Leonardo was very knowledgeable about the history of the towns visited and it was a pleasure to share the day with him. We went to places that were not crowded with tourists and were among locals. One of the day’s highlights was lunch at a family run restaurant ( Trattoria La Roca) with a magnificent view of the countryside in Ceri. This place is not to be missed! The meal was home cooked and the ambiance was authentic local Italian.
I highly recommend Rome Cabs and our guide Leonardo

I booked a tailored tour to visit the Etrusan countyside (Tarquinia and Cerveteri) as this a topic I teach in my classes. The owner offered me to leave an hour earlier than normal for free to ensure that I would be at the museum when it would open at 9 am.
The driver, Michele, offered a superb service, helping me out in tiny details, such as helping me to get a panino in Cerveteri. To me, the whole day meant a lot and I could finally see for myself these unique ruins that shaped the future of the upcoming Roman world.
